Overview

Every immigrant has a story to tell, but it is often untold. They work extraordinarily hard trying to establish an economic foothold in this strange new country to secure their family’s future in America. Parents and grandparents swallow up tears and sweat and seldom let their children know their struggles and vulnerability. Meanwhile, children are anxious about how to better fit in and integrate into “mainstream” culture. Differences in cultural backgrounds and life experiences make communication between two generations difficult to navigate.

To promote intergenerational communication, Chinese American Museum DC, with the support of the Calvin J. Li Memorial Foundation, will host a new essay contest entitled “Dreams of My Parent(s).” Through this essay contest, we hope to foster positive family dialogues and cultivate understanding and appreciation of our shared cultural heritage and immigrant experience.

The Prompt
Your parents have embarked on a remarkable journey, leaving their homeland behind to pursue a better life in America. Their dreams, fueled by hope and resilience, have shaped your life and the lives of others. Now, it's time for you to uncover their stories, to delve into their experiences, and to bridge the cultural gap that exists between you.

Through an in-depth interview with your parent(s) or grandparent(s), embark on a quest to understand their dreams. What was their life like in their homeland? What motivated them to leave? What were their hopes and aspirations upon arriving in America? What challenges did they face as they adapted to a new culture and language? What milestones have they achieved along the way?

As you unravel their stories, weave them into a compelling narrative painting a vivid picture of their life experiences. Capture their emotions, their sacrifices, and their triumphs. Explore how their dreams have evolved over time, influenced by their experiences in America and their changing roles as parents or grandparents.

Through your essay, showcase the strength, resilience, and determination of your parents, and celebrate their life’s triumphs. Let their stories serve as a bridge between generations, fostering understanding and appreciation for the sacrifices and dreams that have shaped your family's journey.
